About the event

M O T H E R (Melanie’s Story)

.

1999

I entered the first Refuge with my two children. I had natural way of connecting with people from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life (and of course women and children). I took it upon myself to organise programmes involving willing participants that promote a life away from violence, as we all know that Domestic Violence is an addiction like any other. The programmes that I started usually commenced after dinner just before the children went to bed, by this time the workers had gone home. The group grew at a rapid rate and soon enough I had 100% participation, which extended to lunch times based on demand. I was a young mother with excellent people skills but no experience with rehabilitation, as I never needed it myself.

Staff would occassionally stay back afterwork to watch how I was…
